One inch is 2.54 centimetres. Not about 2.54. Not 2.54 to two decimal places. Exactly 2.54, with nothing after it, forever.
That is unusual. Most conversions between measurement systems are messy — a mile is 1.609344 km, a pound is 0.45359237 kg. Numbers that look like someone measured something very carefully and wrote down what they found.
The inch is different, and the reason is a small piece of history: in 1959, six countries sat down and decided to make it exact. Here is what that means for your conversions, and the one place it still causes trouble.
The Answers, Exactly

The phrasing varies but the answer does not: how many cm is an inch, how many cm in an inch, how many centimetres in an inch — all 2.54. Same for the foot, whether you ask how many cm in a foot or how many inches in a foot: 30.48 and 12.
Notice the pattern in the last column. Going imperial → metric gives exact numbers. Going metric → imperial gives endless decimals.
That is not a coincidence, and it is not because one system is better. It is because the inch is defined in terms of the centimetre. Divide in the defining direction and it comes out clean; divide the other way and you are dividing by 2.54, which rarely does.
Why It Is Exact, Not Approximate
Before 1959, the inch was not one thing. The United States and the United Kingdom each had their own, and they disagreed — by a tiny amount, but they disagreed. For most purposes it did not matter. For engineering across borders, it did.
On 1 July 1959, six countries — Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States — signed the International Yard and Pound Agreement. It defined the yard as exactly 0.9144 metres.
Everything else falls out of that single line:

1 inch = 0.3048 / 12 = 0.0254 m = 2.54 cmSo 2.54 is not a measurement anybody took. It is a decision somebody made, chosen precisely because it lands on a clean number. The same agreement did the same job for weight, defining the pound as exactly 0.45359237 kg — which is why that conversion is also exact, if considerably uglier.
The US Had Two Different Feet Until 2023
Here is the part almost nobody knows, and it survived far longer than you would expect.
When the US adopted the 1959 definition, it kept a second, older foot alive for one specific purpose: land surveying. Decades of property boundaries and state coordinate systems had been recorded using the pre-1959 value, and re-basing them was not worth the disruption.
So the United States had two feet running in parallel:

Two parts per million sounds harmless, and for a person's height it is — the difference across a 6-foot man works out to under four thousandths of a millimetre, roughly half the width of a red blood cell. Across a state coordinate system it is 20 centimetres per 100 kilometres, which is enough to move a property line.
NIST retired the US survey foot in 2023. The international foot is now the only legal foot in the United States, and the number in this article is the only one you need.
Converting a Height Properly
The most common conversion of all is a height written as feet and inches, and it is where people most often go wrong — not because the maths is hard, but because they do it in the wrong order.
Convert to total inches first. Then multiply once.
5 feet 9 inches
→ (5 × 12) + 9 = 69 inches
→ 69 × 2.54 = 175.26 cmThe mistake is converting the two parts separately and losing track of which unit you are in: 5 feet becomes 152.4 cm, 9 inches becomes 22.86 cm, and if you add those correctly you do get 175.26 — but one slip and you have added centimetres to inches without noticing.
Going the other way, reverse it — divide once, then split:
175 cm
→ 175 / 2.54 = 68.90 inches
→ 68.90 / 12 = 5 feet, remainder 8.90 inches
→ 5 feet 8.9 inchesWhy the Rounded Answer Looks Wrong
This trips people up constantly, and it is worth understanding because it looks like a bug in whatever tool you are using.
Take 176 cm. Convert it and you get 5 feet 9.29 inches. Round that to the nearest inch and you get 5 feet 9 inches. Now convert 5 feet 9 inches back:
176 cm → 5′ 9.29″ → rounds to 5′ 9″
5′ 9″ → 175.26 cm
175.26 ≠ 176 (off by 0.74 cm)Nothing is broken. A whole number of centimetres almost never lands on a whole number of inches, because 2.54 does not divide neatly into round numbers. Rounding to the nearest inch throws away up to half an inch — 1.27 cm — and that discarded amount is what you are seeing.
This is why two people can both be "5 foot 9" and differ by more than a centimetre. The imperial height is a rounded label; the centimetre figure is the measurement.

Look at 170 cm and 176 cm. Both round to a different label than you might expect — 170 cm is closer to 5′ 7″ than 5′ 6″, and 176 cm rounds down to 5′ 9″ despite sitting a shade above 5′ 9¼″. Rounding is doing real work in both.
